Francis Marion Plaskett

Francis Marion Plaskett was born in November 1854 at the Cherokee mining camp. With his brother Reason he discovered and worked the Western Star, the first mine on Plaskett Ridge, hauling ore by mule sled to their father’s arrastra; with Reason and Robert he rode to Jolon to build St. Luke’s church. At the upper edge of Dempsey Flat he planted the orchard whose last gnarled apple tree became famous the length of the coast for fruit of impossible size. He died in 1906.

The Arrastra on Plaskett Creek

Built by William Lucas Plaskett about 1885 and turned by a water wheel on the creek, the family arrastra ground the Western Star's gold ore — and its timbers, iron and basin are still there.
