Carsten Voss (c. 1835-?) was a German immigrant who established a hotel business in San Francisco.

ORIGIN: Born in Hamburg, Germany.

IMMIGRATION: Came to San Francisco in 1860 on a sailing vessel.

BUSINESS: Opened a lunch counter, later going into the hotel business.

FIRST MARRIAGE: Had three children including Will Voss, who later developed a lung ailment and moved to San Ardo.

SECOND MARRIAGE: When widowed with three small children, he met Charlotte Schlicting who stopped at his hotel in 1870. “A friendship developed between them, fostered no doubt by Charlotte Schlicting’s great love for children and seeing the need of a mother in the family.” They married in 1872.

CHILDREN (with Charlotte): Margaret “Greta” (b. 1876), Charlotte “Lottie”, Charley, and Mary.

MOVE TO MONTEREY COUNTY: When son Charley became ill, the family moved from San Francisco to Pleyto, settling on a homestead between Pleyto and Lockwood “near the Ferguson Place and over the hill from the Frank Cox place.”
