William Lucas Plaskett - Educated at William & Mary
A William & Mary man on the frontier: William Lucas set bones and doctored neighbors a hundred miles from help.
William Lucas Plaskett was educated at William & Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia — a rare thing to carry into the mining camps and frontier valleys of California.
The education worked for its living. Though never a physician, he set bones and doctored the remote Pacific Valley community that had no other medical care; he was the literate man of the settlements he passed through; and when the family arrived on the coast in September 1869, it was William Lucas who named Pacific Valley — and the name has held ever since.
