Willey Cruikshank Jilted Twice

Willey Cruikshank bought the ring twice. He never married.

Willey Cruikshank was engaged to Alice Dutton of Jolon. He gave her a diamond ring and planned to meet her in San Francisco for their wedding. But his sister Emily told him Alice had married a young Englishman and sailed for England. Willey, wedding ring in pocket, threw it into San Francisco Bay and returned home a sadder man. Years later he became engaged to Augusta Stringle, giving her $500 for her trousseau in San Francisco. Augusta fled to Portland to marry a girlhood sweetheart. After that Willey had no more use for women.
