Willey Cruikshank was engaged to Alice Dutton of Jolon. He gave her a diamond ring and planned to meet her in San Francisco for their wedding. But his sister Emily told him Alice had married a young Englishman and sailed for England. Willey, wedding ring in pocket, threw it into San Francisco Bay and returned home a sadder man.
