Mabels Uncle Charley homesteaded a place on the open hills above the mill. He looked quite French in his short goatee. He was a thin, strong man with quite an appetite for alcohol. Though he and his wife Elizabeth had no children of their own, he sometimes liked to play with his nearby nephews and nieces. He built a home and planted an orchard, maintaining a six-horse team.
