Mabel loved chatting with the postman — and the valley's gossips made her pay for it.
The mail was one of the pioneers only links with the outside world. Mabel, who was quite outgoing, loved meeting the postman and getting news of the outside world. When old-fashioned Martha Plaskett told Ed how Mabel spoke happily with the mailman, it aroused jealousy. Ed ordered Mabel not to speak with the postman and to keep like a decent wife when mail was delivered. When Martha reported Mabel had disobeyed, Ed became enraged and accused Mabel of having an affair with the postman.
