The Great Journey to Pacific Valley

July 1869: ox teams over Pacheco Pass, Indian trails over the coast range, and a valley at the end of it.

In July 1869, William Lucas Plaskett drove ox teams over Pacheco Pass, through Salinas Valley, and crossed the coastal range on Indian trails. The journey used amphibious covered wagons adapted with wheels for precarious trails. They reached Pacific Valley in September 1869. William Lucas named the place ‘Pacific Valley’ - a name that endures to this day.
