Mother Krenkel - Margaret Dug Well 50 Feet

City-bred Margaret Krenkel dug the family well through its first fifty feet — with her sister on the windlass.

Margaret Krenkel (nee Voss Schmidt), city born and bred, came to love the coastal mountains. She and her sister Lottie helped dig the well for the first 50 feet on their family homestead near Pleyto. After that a Mr. Pauling took over. One day Pauling was overcome by gas fumes in the well. They got him out, but he insisted on going back down and was overcome again. A neighbor Mr. Suits was called to help and was also overcome. By the time help came both men were dead. The well was abandoned and another dug without mishap to 160 feet.
