At fifteen, Martha Bennett crossed the Isthmus of Panama on a porter's back — bound for a new life in California.
Martha Coreen Bennett (born February 1, 1852 in Jackson, Mississippi) came to California via San Francisco with her parents and sister, crossing the Isthmus of Panama piggyback when she was 15 years old. She later married Byron Gianavil Plaskett.
