Joe Moro - Last of the Jolon Indians

Joe Moro, born at Morro Bay in 1881, carried the blood of the San Antonio Mission people to the end.

Joe Moro, one of the last remaining Jolon Indians, was born June 30, 1881 at Morro Bay. His mother was a San Antonio Mission Indian of the Encinal family - named after the great oaks of the valley (Encina in Spanish). Joe and his brother Dave worked for the Sans brothers at the sawmill on Mill Creek for eight years, earning a reputation for diligence and integrity. They later bought the Sans place.
