Harlan Family Sea Adventure to Point Sur

Mrs. Harlan asked about packing a lunch for the boat trip to Monterey. She should have packed for a week.

In 1917, Mrs. George Harlan with her husband, his brother Aaron and five visiting hunters started out in a boat from Big Creek Landing for Monterey. She asked about fixing a lunch and was told “No, we will reach Monterey in three hours.” They encountered very rough seas and were forced to land at Partington Cove the first evening where they dined on mussels. The next morning they battled more rough water and reached Point Sur lighthouse where they spent the second night. Mrs. Harlan recalls climbing a 40-foot ladder at the base of the wooden stairway with great difficulty.
