First Coast School Built Without Nails

The Redwood School opened in 1878 in a building Michael Dani notched together without a single nail.

The first school on the coast was the Redwood School which opened in 1878 with Mr. Cavanaugh as teacher. The school house was built by Michael Dani of logs notched and fitted together without nails. Near the school house was a large flat rock where children loved to climb to eat their lunch at noon. Water was carried from a spring in a pail and set on a bench with a common long-handled dipper for drinking. The Danis were the first family to settle in the immediate area.
