Bears, Cougars, and Wild Animals of Pacific Valley
Winter in Pacific Valley meant bears in the stock pens and cougars in the hills.
The winters in Pacific Valley were difficult. Bears and cougars attacked and killed the stock. In addition, cattle and sheep too often disappeared as though stolen.
During the Plaskett occupation, the younger children dared not venture far from camp - wild cats and foxes inhabited the thicket, and at night there was always the threat of bears.
On top of the mountain, a grizzly once killed a full grown cow on the trail.
The Plaskett men used bear and squirrel oil for lubricating their wagons and machinery. They made their own soap and lye.
