Westlake Place
Bought from the Salinas City Bank (Harry Winham, president) by Edward A. Plaskett and Wesley B. Plaskett — 641.09 acres in two parcels: part of T21S R6E section 26 and lots in T21S R7E section 19. Named for the previous owner, Frank Westlake. Mabel’s name is on the 11 September 1917 mortgage to the Monterey County Bank alongside Edward’s and Wesley’s. The family’s stillborn son Dean was born here on 4 December 1920. After the 1922 Hearst sale on the coast, Edward and Mabel moved the family here, living in the old Westlake house until a new one was built; they sold that house to Hearst in 1925 and moved to King City. A day's ride up a steep mountain trail with two companions, to lie beneath the willows at Wesley's spring — a place that appears on no map. We found the ground: Wesley Plaskett's section in the Oat Hills, inland from Jolon.
