Alderson family

Sir James Alderson

Sir James Alderson was born at Hull and educated at Cambridge, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1822. He was sixth wrangler (meaning he achieved the sixth highest score in the Mathematical Tripos), and afterward became a fellow of Pembroke College. In 1829 he took the degree of M.D. at Oxford, and settling as a physician in London, soon gained a large practice. He was knighted in November 1869, and in the following year Oxford conferred upon him the degree of D.C.L. (Doctor of Civil Law). In 1865 he was appointed physician extraordinary to the queen.
