R.M. Digges
R.M. Digges was a rancher who owned land on the mountain above Mill Creek, near Lion Creek.
REMOTE LOCATION: The Digges place was so remote that “a goat could barely get to it” - high on the mountain above Mill Creek along the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.
LAND: Purchased a homestead above Lion Creek from Tony Fontes.
THE ORANGE TREE (1950-1964): A fruit-bearing orange tree grew on the Digges place at this high elevation - unusual for the mountains. Sometime between 1950 and 1964, after the Army had established Fort Hunter Liggett, they dug out this orange tree and removed it by helicopter, leaving a large hole in the ground. This event is well-remembered by local families.
MILL CREEK AREA: Near the Sans brothers’ saw mill where Mabel Sans (later Plaskett) was raised.
