Edwin W. Culver

Beloved Big Sur mailman known as “Ed the Mailman.” Born in Pacific Grove, attended local schools and graduated from Salinas College (now Hartnell). Served in Air Force, stationed in Lincoln, Nebraska where he met and married Darlene Keith. Started Big Sur mail route in 1951, delivering mail along Highway 1 from Big Sur to Gorda until retirement. Carried groceries, The Herald newspaper, Sunlite bread, cashed checks, ran errands, and was the connection to the outside world for coast residents. Also played jazz and Dixieland on string bass in Monterey Orchestra. Died at Veterans Home of California in Yountville. Plaskett family friend mentioned in Mabel Plaskett’s articles.
